Chapter 24.1

The Third Row

MERIDIAN · INC-0417 · #core restricted · 11 participants · message retention: off

📌 Beck · 17:02 UTC

  1. Assume it is real and assume it generalizes. We are not spending another hour on that.
  2. The coins are the demonstration. The problem is everything still chained to the 2048 anchor — boot, firmware, the embedded tail. Numbers are in the sheet and all of them are bad.
  3. Reach the authors. We cannot do 2 at speed without them.
  4. Nobody talks to press, to government, or to their own executive team. If your counsel needs a call, route it to Kroll.

Ferrante · 17:40 UTC They swept fourteen trailheads at first light. A hundred and forty people, two hundred vehicles, and they came out of it with nothing.

Adeyemi · 17:44 UTC Does that work?

Ferrante · 17:46 UTC Eventually. They have to eat.

Adeyemi · 17:47 UTC Then we want it to work. I would rather they were sitting in an interview room than on a mountain.

Ferrante · 17:52 UTC No. We lose them the minute they are in custody. There will be counsel and there will be a classification, and we will be filing requests for the next two years.

Beck · 17:55 UTC Agreed. We find them first, and we do it this week.

Kroll · 18:31 UTC Before I put anything in writing. Is the third person established, or is it a theory.

Ferrante · 18:35 UTC Established. The Basalt perimeter went dark in forty minutes and it went dark clean. Neither of the two on the news has ever built anything like that.

Kroll · 18:37 UTC That is an inference.

Ferrante · 18:39 UTC The Delaware certificate names three principals. The third has no salary, no vesting schedule, no signature card. Everyone who has looked at him so far has written nominee and moved on.

Kroll · 18:41 UTC And you do not.

Ferrante · 18:44 UTC There is nothing behind that name. No school, no employer, no address, nothing older than the filing itself.

Kroll · 18:46 UTC You said him. You do not have a name.

Ferrante · 18:51 UTC I have been reading his work for two days and I do not have a name or a face. I will take the correction when somebody hands me one.

Adeyemi · 19:10 UTC Anything in the file?

Ferrante · 19:11 UTC No.

Adeyemi · 19:12 UTC Has he read it.

Ferrante · 19:14 UTC He came back for it that night. He bounced it through hosts I have never seen and I lost him on the second one. Then the box went quiet.

Adeyemi · 21:05 UTC Here is the second one. Tear it apart now, not tomorrow.

We are not the government, and we are not the people who put the car at the end of your street. Nobody in this room wants to take this away from you. We are the people who have to re-root a hundred million devices before somebody signs something with the old one, and we cannot do it at the speed it has to happen without the person who did the math. Forty minutes on a phone. You choose the number, you choose the hour, and you hang up whenever you want. Nothing gets written down.

Kroll · 21:19 UTC Three problems and none of them are style.

“Nobody in this room wants to take this away from you.” I cannot let you write that. Four of the organizations on this channel have a disclosure obligation the moment anybody here handles the material, and two of them have counsel who would be required to report it. You are promising something you have to break inside a day.

“Nothing gets written down.” We are writing it down. This message is written down.

“the person who did the math” tells them you know which of the three matters. Take a view on whether you want that.

Adeyemi · 21:26 UTC I want that. We get one message and I am not spending it pretending.

Ferrante · 21:31 UTC Cut the car. The first one already told them we are not law enforcement and we are not the people they are hiding from. They did not believe it the first time.

Ferrante · 21:33 UTC And cut the phone. He is not going to give us a number. Point them back at the file.

Adeyemi · 21:58 UTC

The coins are not the problem. Within days it reaches the root under the firmware, in the things nobody can re-root, and there is no version of that we can walk back. We need forty minutes with whoever did the math. Write in this file. We are not going to write to it again.

Adeyemi · 21:59 UTC That’s what’s left of it.

Kroll · 22:04 UTC I have no objection to it.

Kroll left the channel.

Beck · 22:41 UTC Where did Kroll go.

Ferrante · 22:46 UTC Her general counsel pulled her out. Somebody on their board found out we exist and wants to know under what agreement.

Beck · 22:47 UTC Is she coming back.

Ferrante · 22:49 UTC She says Monday.

stovepipe · 23:12 UTC For the record, my employer’s position is that eight of the companies on this channel are competitors, and that a coordinated action among them requires antitrust clearance. I have been asked to note that and to stay on.

Ferrante · 23:40 UTC They pulled everybody off the trailheads about four hours ago. They are now on grocery stores, the motels, the gas station in Twin Lakes.

stovepipe · 00:20 UTC Managed-fleet numbers. Signature validation failures across the estate are up nine hundred percent week over week. Most of it is small — infusion pumps, building controllers, two brands of point-of-sale terminal. Devices refusing updates they took last month.

Adeyemi · 00:26 UTC That’s revocation churn, not the break. People are pulling certificates in a panic and nothing downstream knows what to do with it.

stovepipe · 00:28 UTC Some of it. I have pumps in three hospitals that will not take a firmware image, and nobody at any of them has revoked anything.

Beck · 00:31 UTC Below the line. We come back to it.

Ferrante · 01:40 UTC I want to hold the second message.

Adeyemi · 01:41 UTC It’s the only thing we have.

Ferrante · 01:52 UTC I have found four other machines of his. He knows about this one. If anybody else is sitting on that box, a second write tells them we want one specific person out of the three. It also tells him we cannot wait.

Adeyemi · 01:58 UTC So we sit on our hands.

Ferrante · 02:03 UTC So we stop writing to a box and go to people.

Beck · 02:11 UTC Hold it.

Beck · 02:24 UTC Two lines, both moving tonight.

One. Money. We are going to be paying for this rotation whether or not we ever speak to these three, and it should start before anybody asks a government for a budget. Adeyemi owns it.

Two. Names. There are maybe forty people alive who could do this and be trusted with it, and I know nine of them. Ferrante, work the closed lists.

Ferrante · 02:29 UTC Call a cryptographer at two in the morning, decline to say who I work for, and ask him which of his friends he’d trust with a key.

Beck · 02:31 UTC Yes.

Ferrante · 02:33 UTC Fine.

Adeyemi · 02:40 UTC What about the investor. Boulder. He has known Reed for years and he’s been calling everybody in the field for two days.

Ferrante · 02:44 UTC That’s why not. He’s loud and somebody is already reading him. We touch him and we’re visible by morning.

Beck · 03:58 UTC Contact sheet v4 is in the folder. It does not leave this channel.

1 REED, Marcus A.
2 HALE, Samantha
3

Ferrante · 04:01 UTC Row three.

Beck · 04:02 UTC Put the Delaware entity in it, and the agent it was filed under.

Ferrante · 04:04 UTC We still don’t have a name.

Beck · 04:06 UTC I know. Leave the row in.

Adeyemi · 04:11 UTC She’s twenty-nine. It was thirty-one degrees in Leadville last night.

Beck · 04:12 UTC Then find her.
